Desmond Tutu
1984 Desmond Mpilo Tutu (1931- )
Tutu già da bambino amava la lettura, figlio di padre insegnante. A 12 anni andò a Johannesburg dove frequentò la Johannesburg Bantu High School una scuola solo per persone di colore con scarsissime risorse finanziarie. Tutu ricorda l’educazione eccellente ricevuta dagli insegnanti: "The people who taught us were very dedicated and they inspired you to want to emulate them and really to become all that you could become. They gave you the impression that, in fact, yeah, the sky is the limit. You can, even with all of the obstacles that are placed in your way; you can reach out to the stars." Si diploma nel 1950 e dopo tre anni si certifica come insegnante presso Pretoria Bantu Normal College e laurea alla Università del sud Africa nel 1954. Ritorna alla Johannesburg Bantu High School dove insegnò inglese e storia fino al 1957. "I tried to be what my teachers had been to me to these kids, seeking to instill in them a pride, a pride in themselves. A pride in what they were doing. A pride that said they may define you as so and so. You aren't that. Make sure you prove them wrong by becoming what the potential in you says you can become." Si ricorda che nel 1948 con la vittoria del Partito Nazionale anche nelle elezioni del 1948 l'idea dell’apartheid venne trasformata in un sistema legislativo compiuto. Nel 1953, il governo approvò il Bantu Education Act che abbassò gli standard di educazione per gli studenti di colori con investimenti in educazione pari ad un decimo di quelli bianchi. Tutu, con classi che spesso arrivavano ad 80 studenti lasciò l’insegnamento protestando contro le misere prospettive educative dei sudafricani di colore, a causa di un sistema espressamente costruito per promuovere a disuguaglianza.
